Manang District
History
Manang District, a part of Gandaki
Zone, is one of the seventy-five
districts of Nepal. Manang is valley
situated in the rain shadow in the
north of Annapurna range of
Himalayas and trans Himalayan region
of Nepal. It is still one of the
remotest and inaccessible valleys in
Nepal .The district, with Chame as
its district headquarters and other
13 Village Develop Committee ,
covers an area of 2,246 km² .
Altitude of 3,519 metres (11,545 ft
) and high mountain pass of Thorung
La at 5415 (17769 ft) meters above
the sea connects the district to
Mustang District by providing a
route between the towns of Manang to
Muktinath, Mustang, Tibet and
western region .
The Manang Valley, which lies close
to the Nepal-Tibet border, offers
tremendous opportunities due to its
rich natural flora and fauna. Three
tracks start from here. The first,
via Thorangla, Muktinath, and
Mustang to Lhasa—a journey that
takes four days; the second via Naur
Khola and Naurgaon, which takes five
days to Lhasa; and finally the third
via Larkiya bazar, which is the one
most commonly used by the people of
Central Nepal.
Mostly inhabited by Gurungs and
Ghales eminently innocent and hard
working people, Manang has survived
with the century old culture and
tradition still when we are entering
21st century. Monasteries, Natural
beauties and typical villages are
the places to visit. Tourism,
agriculture, animal husbandry is
mail occupation of Manang. They have
received special dispensation from
travel abroad with precious stones
and metals, musk, herbs and other
items. Many of the Manangies spend
as much as six months away from
home, returning only during the
summers.

Since
the area was opened to outsiders
(foreigner) in the late 1970s, many
have switched from the traditional
agriculture to hotelier and tourism
business and going to abroad for job
Manang has always been an important
point for tourists visiting popular
Annapurna Trekking Route. It boasts
of spectacular mountain scenery,
vibrant colors of nature, wild
flowers and herbs, tranquil lakes
and plenty of adventure
opportunities, he informed.
This place is one of the par t of
world famous Annapurna Trekking
Route. Most groups trekking around
the Annapurna will take resting days
in Manang to acclimatize to the high
altitude, before taking the Thorong
La pass. The village is situated on
the northern slope, which gets the
most sunlight and the least snow
cover in the winter. The cultivation
fields are on the north slope with
terraces.
Manang is a beautiful village just
below the Thorong la pass situated
within the Annapurna conservation
area. Thorong La Pass (5,416m) is
one of the highest trekking passes
in the world. Yak roam the valley
sides surrounded by stunning 6000 to
8000m peaks, and the area also
contains high concentrations of
endangered species such as snow
leopard and blue sheep. The area is
a botanist's paradise with rare
flowers and herbs in abundance. Just
above the valley The world's highest
situated lake(5000m), Tilicho lake,
is just above the manang valley.
